Benito Mussolini, the deposed Italian fascist dictator, was executed by an Italian partisan, generally believed to be Walter Audisio, a communist partisan, in the village of Giulino di Mezzegra in northern Italy on April 28, 1945. This occurred during the final days of World War II in Europe. After his execution, Mussolini’s body, along with that of his mistress, Claretta Petacci, was taken to Milan and left in a suburban square, the Piazzale Loreto, where a large angry crowd insulted and physically abused the bodies. They were then hung upside down from a metal girder above a service station on the square. Mussolini’s death marked the end of fascist rule in Italy and played a significant role in the conclusion of World War II.
