This is the year that the electromagnet was introduced to the world by electrical engineer William Sturgeon. It allowed for the controlled use of magnetic fields using electricity; if a current was passed through it, it became magnetized, and if the current was cut off, it would demagnetize. His biggest display of the electromagnet happened when he used a small piece of iron, wrapped in wires, to lift nine pounds of metal with the power of one single cell battery. Although he didn't see its true potential, he did set the stage for the use of electrical energy in machines and the development of large-scale communications.
