Gratian is killed by his troops for having failed to act during the winter and Constantine III is declared the emperor of western Roman by his troops. He appoints new officials loyal to him in key positions in Maxima Caesariensis and Flavia Caesariensis. Officials in Prima and Secunda, though largely apathetic to Constantine, are left unchanged.
