Adam Krellenstein publishes "Counterparty An Extension to Bitcoin by State-Machine Replication" on his website shortly after taking over the role of Lead Maintainer for the Counterparty Github.

After almost 9 years of absence from a project he helped to create, he explains his theory of how he views the Counterparty protocol. He also labels Counterparty as a 'metaprotocol' and includes some lesser known historical backstory and influences.

Adam also reaffirms the importance and functionality of Counterparty's utility token (XCP), the intention to integrate Counterparty with new modern and popular Bitcoin functionality such as treating UTXO's as 'first class object in the protocol', as well as implement a general-purpose virtual machine into the protocol (also known as 'smart contracts').
