As the United States pushed further into the western territories, the matter of slavery in these new territories grew more heated. The admission of Missouri as a state that allowed slavery posed a risk to the equilibrium between states that allowed slavery and those that did not. Following vigorous discussions, Congress agreed on the Missouri Compromise in 1820, which allowed Missouri to become a slave state and Maine to remain a free state, while also setting a boundary against slavery north of the 36°30′ parallel. This agreement temporarily soothed the tensions between the North and South but also brought to light the deep-seated divisions within the nation. While it preserved a period of peace, it also highlighted the ongoing and unresolved issue of slavery in the United States, setting the stage for the conflicts that would eventually culminate in the Civil War.
