9 ago 1890 ano - Altered Objects: The Bieri Figure
Descrição:
Many preexisting objects had to be modified in order to be concealable so that European colonizers were not aware of the objects that would be seen as a threat to European social control.
The Bieri for example, sat atop a box used to traditionally preserved skulls, bones, and relics of their ancestors.
The scultptures functioned as a point of contact with the ancestors. However, colonizers found this as practice a form of idealization and banned or destroyed these ancestral monuments.
So as an adjustment, many of these Bieri were removed from atop the boxes that immortalized their ancestors and were left with just a box to house the remains of ancestors.
