After severe financial and political instability a coup was launched against then-President Mikhail Gorbachev and the USSR was dissolved and led to the creation of Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
