The Treaty of Portsmouth, signed in 1905, officially ended the Russo-Japanese War and was mediated by U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in New Hampshire. The treaty recognized Japan's dominance in Korea and ceded control of Port Arthur and the Liaodong Peninsula to Japan, while Russia agreed to evacuate Manchuria, solidifying Japan's emergence as a major power in East Asia and earning Roosevelt the Nobel Peace Prize.
