The Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty was signed in 1903 between the United States and the newly independent Republic of Panama, granting the U.S. the right to build, administer, and fortify the Panama Canal. This treaty provided the U.S. control over the Canal Zone, a strip of land 10 miles wide across the Isthmus of Panama, in perpetuity, facilitating the strategic and commercial goals of the U.S. while engendering lasting tensions over sovereignty and control in Panama.
