The Platt Amendment, passed in 1901, was legislation that stipulated conditions for U.S. military withdrawal from newly independent Cuba, effectively making Cuba a U.S. protectorate. The amendment restricted Cuba's sovereignty and authorized the United States to intervene in Cuban affairs if necessary to maintain an efficient, independent government, and it also required Cuba to lease naval stations to the United States, notably Guantanamo Bay.
