The Oneida Community, founded in 1848 in Oneida, New York, by John Humphrey Noyes, was a utopian religious commune that practiced complex marriage, communal property, and shared parenting responsibilities. The community was also innovative economically, supporting itself through the manufacture of silverware and other goods, but it dissolved in 1881 due to internal conflicts and external pressures, transitioning into a joint-stock company.
