On the night of January 5-6, 1948, during the 1947–1948 Civil War in Mandatory Palestine, the Jewish paramilitary group Haganah bombed the Semiramis Hotel in Jerusalem's Katamon neighborhood, suspecting it served as an Arab headquarters. The attack killed 24 to 26 civilians, including at least one child and members of the Aboussouan family; the Spanish vice-consul Manuel Allende Salazar also perished. Haganah claimed the hotel was a key meeting point for Arab forces distributing arms. The bombing was widely criticized, leading to the dismissal of Haganah officer Mishael Shaham by David Ben-Gurion. British authorities and some historians have contested the military relevance of the target, describing the incident as an attack on innocents.
