1 jan 1585 ano - Esablishment and Disappearance of the Roanoke Colony

Descrição:

The Roanoke colony was established in 1585 on Roanoke Island, located in present-day North Carolina, by Sir Walter Raleigh. This venture was sponsored by the English crown in hopes of establishing a foothold in the New World and exploiting its resources.
The first attempt at colonization, led by Ralph Lane, was ultimately unsuccessful due to various challenges, including conflicts with local indigenous tribes, food shortages, and harsh living conditions. The colonists returned to England in 1586.

Despite the difficulties faced during the first attempt, Sir Walter Raleigh remained determined to establish a successful colony in the Americas. In 1587, he sponsored a second expedition to Roanoke, this time under the leadership of John White.
The second group of colonists, including men, women, and children, arrived at Roanoke Island in July 1587. Among them was Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the Americas.
Shortly after their arrival, John White returned to England to procure additional supplies and reinforcements, leaving behind a group of about 115 colonists.

When John White returned to Roanoke in 1590, he found the colony deserted, with no sign of the colonists or their belongings. The only clue left behind was the word "Croatoan" carved into a post and "Cro" carved into a nearby tree.
The fate of the Roanoke colonists remains one of the enduring mysteries of American history. Various theories have been proposed, including assimilation into local indigenous tribes, relocation to a nearby island (possibly Croatoan Island), or massacre by hostile indigenous groups.
Despite numerous search efforts and investigations over the centuries, the ultimate fate of the Roanoke colonists has never been definitively determined.
