The Selective Service Act of 1940 was the first peacetime conscription in United States history, enacted before the U.S. entered World War II, due to increasing global conflicts and the need to strengthen the U.S. military. This act required all men aged 21 to 35 to register for the draft and greatly expanded the U.S. armed forces in preparation for potential involvement in global warfare.
