The Tulsa Race Massacre occurred between May 31 and June 1, 1921, in the affluent African American community of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma, often referred to as "Black Wall Street." The violence began after a black teenager was accused of assaulting a white woman, leading to racial tensions that escalated into a mob of white residents attacking Greenwood, resulting in the destruction of the community and the deaths of an estimated 100 to 300 African Americans.
