The Compromise of 1850 was a series of five legislative measures passed by the U.S. Congress which defused a four-year political confrontation between slave and free states regarding the status of territories acquired during the Mexican-American War. Key elements of the compromise included the admission of California as a free state, the strengthening of the Fugitive Slave Act, the abolition of the slave trade in Washington, D.C., and the establishment of territorial governments in the remainder of the acquired lands, with the decision on slavery left to popular sovereignty.
