John Peter Zenger was a German American printer and journalist in New York City who, in 1735, was accused of libel by the colony's governor but was acquitted. His trial and acquittal established a precedent for freedom of the press and laid an early foundation for the protections eventually included in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
