1 jan 1818 ano - Frederick Douglass
Descrição:
Douglass was born into slavery in or around 1818. Having taught himself to read and write, he taught other enslaved people to read using the Bible. He escaped slavery in 1838, finally arriving in a safe house in New York. Moving with his wife to New Bedford, he began attending meetings of the abolitionist movement. He published several autobiographies during his lifetime in the style of a slave narrative, embedding his abolitionist beliefs. He also became involved in the movement for women's rights. In 1852, he delivered one of his most famous speeches, asking :“What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer: a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim."
During the Civil War, he intitially supported President Lincoln but later fell into disagreement with him over the lack of support for African Americans beyond legally ending the practice of slavery. In the post-war Reconstruction era, Douglass served in many official positions in government, including as an ambassador to the Dominican Republic, thereby becoming the first Black man to hold high office. Douglass remained an active speaker, writer and activist until his death in 1895.
