The Preston Bypass was the first motorway in the UK. It was a result of increased car ownership. Car ownership rose by 25% between 1957 to 1959. This changed ideas about holidays, commuting, leisure and push housing outside of towns and cities.

However car ownership did not reach everyone. Four out of five working-class families still lacked a car.
