This nation knows about discrimination against blacks, but not whites, generally. That is the apartheid - the state sponsorship of one race, in particular, black superiority over white. Nelson Mandela despised this system, and spoke against it (and organized strikes against it) in South Africa. Symbolically, Nelson Mandela existed in the eyes of many as a champion of egalitarianism, and how social corruption existed in many forms, not solely against blacks and not solely in America. He represented the forgotten classes and countries, what America was supposed to represent - and fought for them, and sacrificed his life for it. Likewise, Mandela is remembered even now for that balance, and would make for a useful reminder to the crazed politic of our country.
