1959 saw the first US ICBM (called ‘Atlas’). Americans estimated that soviet missiles would outnumber theirs ten times over by 1961, so they tried to catch up. Before long, they had many more than the Russians. They also began to build shorter range nuclear missiles (called Jupiters and Thors), usable from launch sites in Europe and Turkey.
