1 maio 1689 ano - Louis XIV Officially Approves Slavery

Descrição:

"The holding of enslaved people, already practised for several decades, received official approval on May 1, 1689, when King Louis XIV provided royal assent in response to the petitions of the colonists (Winks 1997: 4-5). Though slavery was not practised in all households, it was nonetheless seen as a normal, natural facet of settler colonial society spanning wide differences in social class and occupation. Slave ownership was practised in cities and rural areas. Its practitioners included leading government officials, judges, members of the Executive Council, business owners, landlords, notaries, doctors, high ranking military officers, the clergy, butchers and even hospitals (Trudel 1960: 137-156). As apart of the landscape of New France, it was not uncommon for Black and Indigenous people to be sold side-by-side with livestock, at slave auctions and in the newspapers (Ridell 1920)."
