The Egyptian commander, al-Kamil, learned of a plan to kill him to replace him with his brother, forcing him to flee the Egyptian camp. The Crusaders took the opportunity and attacked the Egyptian camp, finding it abandoned. This paved the way for the Crusaders to surround Damietta.
