The mayflower intended to arrive at Virginia, but strong winds diverted it towards Cape Cod. The 102 passengers, seeking religious freedom and American land ownership, settled down in Massachusetts. Fearing the destruction of their colony, they created the Mayflower Compact that established self government. They also established the Plymouth Colony, second US colony.
