Conflict over the Falkland islands existed since it's independence in 1812. France, Britain and Spain had control of the islands before hand with Spain controlling all of Argentina before the empire collapsed. Britain still had control over the island and the people living there were of Britain origins. The islander's general ideology was to have the islands stay British as it is their heritage and the Argentina government consisted of a harsh far-right dictatorship. Nevertheless, the Argentina government wanted the Falklands with a general saying the islands were "an open wound on Argentina's soul".

Fortunately for Argentina, it appeared that Britain began to become disinterested in the islands. The HMS Endurance was as UK military ship which patrolled the Falkland and Sandwich Islands, this ship was removed. This was a clear sign to Argentina that the Falklands were not an interest to Britain. With only 40 troops on the islands, General Galtieri and his troops invaded.
