Fort Ticonderoga was once called Fort Carillon, a French fort who's capture was essential for the British to gain control over Lake Champlain. The French were force to retreat in this battle, but not before they set fire to the fort's gun powder. The British repaired the fort and renamed it Ticonderoga.
