7 jul 1923 ano - Stresemann and Recovery

Descrição:

Although he was chancellor for only a few months, Stresemann was a much more skillful politician than Ebert. He was also right-wing and therefore had wider support. During his position as chancellor, he had a lot of achievements, but also a lot of problems.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Economic:
- He introduced a new currency which helped stop inflation, the Rentenmark.
- Introduced the Dawes Plan, which was a way for Germany to achieve its reparation debt faster, and easier. The Dawes plan insisted on the US giving Germany loans in order for it to pay its reparations, Germany using those loans to pay France, and France then using the loans given by Germany to pay the debts it had with the US. This was a good strategy, since after the War Germany's factories were run down; the Dawes plan meant that Germany could use its money to focus on rebuilding itself

Politics:
- No more attempted revolutions
- More cooperation between parties
- there was an increase in support for the Weimar Republic

Culture:
- since the Kaiser had been abdicated, culture and self-expression were now accepted
- painters, musicians, actors
- people now had time to do things since they weren't at war or in riots

Foreign Policy:
- signed the Locarno Treaty 1925 (France, Belgium, and Germany all agreed to not change their borders)
- Germany joins LON
- By 1929, Stresemann made the Young Plan which was aimed at decreasing the reparations amount Germany needed to pay, along with troops being removed from the Rhineland (unfortunately, Stresemann died during the negotiation of this plan, and therefore it never happened, but it did show some sort of cooperation between countries)

PROBLEMS

Economic:
- the Dawes Plan was not always reliable
- there was a boom in the Weimar economy, which caused inequality between land owners and farmers. Landowners were gaining much more
- taxes became high
- there were extremes of wealth and poverty

Politics:
- Nazis and communists were gaining support
- 30% of votes regularly went to parties opposed to the republic

Foreign Policy:
- The singing of the Locarno treaty meant Germany accepted the TOV
