1 fev 1945 ano - Yalta Confrence
Descrição:
In February 1945, it was clear that Germany was loosing the war, and so the big 3 at the time (Stalin, Churchill, and Roosevelt) met at a town called Yalta in Ukraine to plan what would happen after the war. The conference went well with agreements being the main part, and only 1 disagreement.
Agreements:
- Stalin agreed to join the war and fight against Japan once Germany had surrendered
- They agreed that Germany was to be split into 4 zones (American, British, French, and Soviet)
- They agreed that as countries were liberated from the German army they could choose what government they wanted
- all 3 joined the United Nations which aimed to keep the peace after the war
- War criminals responsible for the German concentration camps would all be hunted down and punished
- The soviet sphere of influence was agreed upon since the Soviets lost up to 20 million people due to WW2, and Stalin was worried about the USSR's security in case of another war in Europe
Disagreements:
- What to do with Poland. Stalin wanted to move the USSR's border westwards to Poland and said that Poland could move its border into Germany as a result. Churchill did not approve of this but knew there wasn't much he could do since the Red Army was occupying Poland and East Germany at the time. Roosevelt was also not happy but was convinced by Churchill, in return for the USSR not intervening with Greece which was where the British were attempting to prevent communism from taking over at the time, Stalin agreed to this.
What did Stalin gain from Yalta?
- Sphere of Influence
- Got a share of Berlin and germany
- Reparations ( 10 billion USD from the US to USSR)
- Helped in the war, making Stalin look good
