Coligny and 3,000 fellow Huguenots were butchered in Paris; marriage celebration for Catherine's daughter (King Charles IX's sister) to a leader of the Huguenot faction, Henry of Navare, threatening the Valois family line and Catholicism in France; when the "cream of the Huguenot aristocracy gathered in Paris" to celebrate the wedding, Catherine encouraged his son to set St. Batholomew's Day Massacre in motion; Henry's life spared when he promised to reutn to Catholicism
