Prior to the 1990s presidential election in Colombia, Luis Carlos Galan Sarmiento, representing the liberal party, was projected to win the election by a considerable margin. He had gained support throughout the country through his masterful skills as an orator and his progressive views as well as his harsh stance towards the drug trade, which made him an enemy to many powerful entities in Colombia, including cartels, guerillas and even other politicians, and Galan had in fact already narrowly avoided an assassination attempt in Medellin earlier that same year. Galan had already been an enemy of members of the Medellin cartel, specifically Pablo Escobar, when he played a part in exposing Escobar’s Drug empire alongside Rodrigo Lara, effectively killing Escobar’s political aspirations in the process. During his campaign in 1989, Galan continued to attend public rallies despite warnings from his team, and on August 18th 1989, while attending a rally in Soacha, Galan was shot multiple times by sicarios working for Escobar, he would die on his way to the hospital later that same night. His murder was a complex one, with involvement not only from the Medellin cartel, but also from DAS, the Colombian secret police, as well as rival political parties. To this day his murder remains one of, if not the most significant political assassination in Colombian history.
