a plane crash
Descrição:
On April 28 1983, M19 founder and leader Jaime Bateman Cayon, also known as el Flaco, died in a plane crash above Panama. Having been one of the most prominent and influential guerrilla leaders in Colombian history, Bateman had been involved with the FARC for many years before separating from the group and forming M19, the 19th of April movement, a marxist revolutionary group who perceived themselves to be a group who’s struggle was a reincarnation of that of the war of independence from Spain, with the group even at one point stealing the sword of Colombian independence leader Simon Bolivar in an attempt to legitimise their armed conflict against the Colombian government. Some of the groups most well known exploits up to this point included the theft of Bolivar’s sword as well as multiple high level hostage crisis, including a siege on the Dominican embassy in 1980. Bateman’s death would lead to the gradual unravelling of a treaty between M19 and the Colombian government, which led to the group continuing attacks around the Colombian jungle. Setting back the peace process with M19 even further.
