Mary Whiton Calkins became the first female American Psychological Association (APA) president in 1905, reflecting her significant contributions to psychology. Although she earned a PhD from Harvard under William James, she was refused her degree on the basis she was a woman. She is renowned for developing the System of Self-Psychology, positing that the discipline should focus on the self within its physical and social contexts (American Psychological Association, n.d.; VanMattson, 2023, Lecture 10)
