At home with Johnny Depp's idol

It rocks in Nänikon! With his Swiss wife Sandra, US guitarist Tommy Henriksen lives in the Zurich Oberland. Here, son Finn regularly talks to his god: the most famous pirate in the world.

The village fountain ripples, a tractor rattles by. But 5-year-old Finn has no eyes for that. Again and again he reaches into the pack of chips that his father Tommy bought in the Volg. "I love living in Nänikon!" says Tommy Henriksen, 54, in American English. It is totally different here than in Los Angeles - the American lived there until five years ago.

"People greet each other, cows graze on the meadows." Finn tuks on Dad's leather jacket: The chips bag is empty. Tommy shakes his head. "Tonight you're skyping with Uncle Johnny again. Then ask him if he'll invite you to a portion of chips the next time he's back."

Tommy laughs. The neighboring farmer looked after him at the beginning, he says on his way home. "Probably because of my many tattoos. I'm just a rock musician. But a normal one."

From Los Angeles to Nänikon
For almost four years, Henriksen has lived with his Swiss wife Sandra and Finn in the inconspicuous apartment building in Nänikon, a district of Uster ZH. 1800 inhabitants, stately farmhouses, well-kept gardens. The landmark is the Türmlischulhaus. Its bell announces the birth and death of locals.

"Welcome home!" Tommy takes off the western boots, hugs his Sandra. "She is the best in the world!" The 41-year-old banker from Dietlikon ZH waves off. English is spoken by the Henriksens. Shock rocker Alice Cooper was already at the long parlour table, Tommy plays in his band. "That was quite relaxed," says Henriksen. "Sandra is an excellent cook and a wonderful hostess." There was grilled chicken breast with risotto.

Tom Petty's "Free Fallin" is beeperated from the CD player. Finn stands next to the speakers, sings along. Sandra: "Finn has music in his blood, Tommy's genes." Sapo, a rabbit of the dwarf ram breed, hops into the children's room, Finn runs after him. A photo hangs on the wall, it shows Finn with Johnny Depp. The five-year-old's eyes begin to shine. "Uncle Johnny!" - that's what Finn calls his famous god.

Father Tommy and the 55-year-old Hollywood star are big friends, visit each other regularly. For example, when the Henriksens were on vacation in Los Angeles. Since then, Finn has been raving: "Uncle Johnny has a mega cool pool!"

In the summer of 2016, Depp invited the family and Tommy's in-laws to the south of France in his villa near Saint-Tropez - to celebrate Sandra's birthday. And when Depp was in Zurich for the premiere of his film "Richard Says Goodbye" at the beginning of October, Sandra and Finn visited him in his hotel suite. "We know Johnny as a kind person. He is shy and modest, lovable and funny."

It is 25 minutes from Nänikon-Greifensee train station to Zurich Airport. This is what Tommy comes with: Eight months a year he is away from home, somewhere in the world: mostly on tour with Alice Cooper. "The guy is seventy, but fit like a sneaker, he plays golf, drinks Diet Coke all day. And he loves to tour! We play over a hundred concerts a year. He's a fucking crazy animal!"

Tommy often works in Los Angeles in his music studio, where he has already produced for Lou Reed and Lady Gaga. The studio is located in one of Johnny's houses. "We get along splendidly! The love of music and art, we have so much in common. Johnny calls us the Brothers Grimm or Gipsy Punks - he the gypsy, I the punk."

When Depp gives the SI a detailed interview in July, he says about Henriksen: "Tommy is not one of the fucking ass crawlers who are buzzing around me. He is open and honest with me. That's why he's my friend." At that time, the two perform as guitarists at the Montreux Jazz Festival, in the rock supergroup Hollywood Vampires.

Tommy is sitting at the living room table. "Finn has no idea that Johnny is a star. For him, he is simply the person he sees in him." If the two meet, Johnny takes his idol in his arms, plays with him, takes his time. "That's what Finn loves."

Two days ago, the two talked via Facetime. Finn told the idol that he wore his favorite outfit on Halloween: the pirate costume! Finn has never seen a film by Depp, who became world famous with Pirates of the Caribbean.

He moved here for the sake of his family, says Tommy. The love story began at the Sonisphere Festival 2011 in Basel. Sandra is a behind-stage troubleshooter, Tommy rocks the joggeli with Alice. Backstage, their paths cross. "For me, it was love at first sight," says Tommy.

But Cooper gets him out of his dreams: "This woman is not your league!" Nevertheless, it comes to the date weeks later in Zurich. Tommy and Sandra eat at the "Hiltl", he with a black leather coat, black fingernails and skull scarf. "To say goodbye, he gave me a tender kiss."

The same year he invites her to a concert in Paris, Cooper says to Tommy: "You would be an idiot if you didn't marry her!" Sandra regularly travels to Los Angeles to visit Tommy. He introduces himself to her parents as follows: "Everything you know about rock musicians is true. But I am the exception."

Sandra nods. A month later, he kneels in front of Sandra in a restaurant: "Do you want to be my wife?" She says yes. The civil wedding takes place in Hawaii, with Alice and his wife Sheryl as witnesses, the wedding in a church in Dübendorf ZH.

Finn is born in June 2013, Tommy is restrained to Switzerland, he wants Finn to grow up here. "Here Sandra has her job, the quality of life is high, the school routes are short. And everything is explained to you in detail." Sandra also laughs, says: "We lead an almost normal life."

If Tommy is not on the road, he takes Finn to kindergarten, producing music in his home studio. He is currently working on a CD of the Hollywood Vampires. "The day before yesterday, Johnny called me to change a few lyrics."

Tommy recently finished producing the new live DVD of the Vampires in Los Angeles, with Johnny. Hard days. "Johnny doesn't start studio work before 10 p.m."

Finn storms into the room, grabs the iPad. Skype! Here Nänikon, there Los Angeles. "Hello Mr. Finn, here's uncle Johnny. How are you?" - "Fine." Then Finn tells what he made in kindergarten, the two chat for half an hour.
