Napoleon Bonaparte and some other conspirators who were frustrated with the leadership of the Directory staged a coup d'etat, overthrowing them and assuming power themselves. They replaced the Directory with a three-person government called the Consulate, where Napoleon was first consul. This government kept up its republican appearance, but Napoleon was the real ruler and held the power. Napoleon's hunger for power led him to lead France to expand across Europe.
