In 1923 the Chinese Immigration Act was introduced, prohibiting the immigration of all Chinese people into Canada. From 1885 to 1923 Canada instilled a head tax of $500 on Chinese immigrants to try and decrease the amount of immigrants they received. This proved somewhat unsuccessful so they banned Chinese immigration altogether. The Chinese immigration act declares that “No person of Chinese origin or descent ... shall be permitted to enter or land in Canada''. This was a massive act of discrimination towards the Chinese citizens, as they had already established themselves as an important ethnic group in Canada with there being roughly 140,000 Chinese people who served Canada on the front lines during World War 2. Overall, the Chinese Immigration Act led to a decline in Canada as it showed significant racial discrimination against Chinese immigrants, causing all ethnic groups in Canada to think and advocate against the racism that was thoroughly displayed.
