29 jul 1920 ano - Residential Schools Becoming Mandatory (-2)
Descrição:
In 1920, residential schools became mandatory for all Indigenous children from the ages of 4 - 16. This caused over 150,000 indigenous children to go to residential schools. The residential schools were torturous to the children as they weren’t provided with sufficient food or clothes, while also being stripped of their culture. In some residential schools, there was up to a 60% mortality rate, creating long-term stress and scarring for the survivors. The trauma they faced has led to chronic issues in Indigenous societies such as substance abuse. The schools also created significant impacts on Indigenous peoples, as they took their children from their homes, scarred them for the rest of their lives, and stripped them of their culture. This brought significant decline for Canada as their relationships with Indigenous communities were destroyed, creating significant division.
