In 1991 Boris Yeltsin announced the abolition of the Soviet Union and the creation of 11 independent republics. This was of the low economic growth in the union. The spending that was being used for the military to "protect" the satellite countries was low which led to the withdrawing of the soldiers. This would lead to the end of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War.
