NIRA = National Industry Recovery Act
NRA = National Recovery Administration
Supreme Court ruled these unconstitutional so Roosevelt had to step in.
Less laissez-faire, more government intervention.
NIRA:
- suspends the Shernan Anti-Trust law and supports an alliance of industries
- companies were required to write industry wide codes of fair competition that effectively fixed wages and prices, established production quotas, and placed restrictions on the entry of other companies into the alliances - it was a form of industry self-regulation and represented an attempt to regulate and plan the entire economy to promote stable growth and prevent another Depression
- short term effects = employees given the right to organise unions, employees could no longer be required to join/refrain from joining a labour organisation
- ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 1935 and was never replaced
NRA:
- US government agency established by the President to stimulate business recovery through fair practice codes during the Great Depression
- aimed to regulate industrial practices including working conditions
- companies that subscribed the the NRA codes were allowed to display a Blue Eagle emblem, symbolic of their cooperation with the NRA
- improved labour conditions in some industries and aided the unionisation movement
- codes of fair competition
- regulation of business practice
