The Group Settlement Scheme was a government assisted program, held in WA to help boost the migration, economy and population in Australia, held in the early 1920s.
The aim of the assisted program was to create a labour force, to develop larger areas of farm land and to stop relying on the eastern stated for food. Another aim was to promote the establishment of dairy industries in WA. It offered 100,000 British migrants an assisted passageway to Australia.
But, by 1925, the scheme didn't work out as well. Only 2,442 areas of farm land out of the 6,000 that was planned, were ever developed. The other farm land was too poor quality, ;so many settlers left the farms to go settle somewhere else. Some people even left Australia to return to the UK.
By 1930 the scheme was abolished and turned out to be a financial and social failure for the Western Australian government.
The loss to WA was and estimated amount of £6,500,000.
