A secret society of Irish immigrants which emerged in Ireland in the 1840s due to the potato famine.

In the US, they were blamed for a series of violent assaults, arsons, and murders between 1861- 1875 in Pennsylvania. They were fighting against the discrimination the Irish received and protesting against bad working conditions (especially in the mines) These protests included derailing railway carriages, setting fire to coal tips and even some murders. In 1873, they were infiltrated due to the organisation becoming an impediment to increasing railroad profits (most were coal miners). 20 were sentenced to death by the authorities and 10 were executed.
