Japan's official surrender takes place aboard the USS Missouri, at which Imperial Japanese officials sign the the Instrument of Surrender, thereby ending the hostilities.
The occupation of Japan is overseen by the US General Douglas Macarthur, who was appointed Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers by US President Harry Truman.
