The ultimate culmination of Flashpoint, The New 52, and Rebirth, this event sees the DC Universe collide head-on with the Watchmen Universe. Dr. Manhattan is revealed to have been the secret force behind the creation of the New 52 during the end of Flashpoint. After leaving his war-torn universe, Manhattan found himself in the DC Universe around the time of Flashpoint, although due to his nature, he exists throughout all of time. Noting that time worked differently in this universe, Manhattan began experimenting with changing the timeline, performing actions such as preventing the formation of the Justice Society and thus the Golden Age of DC, as well as shifting Superman's arrival on Earth back by decades at a time, until eventually creating a timeline where the Legion of Superheroes will not come to exist. By the time he was done meddling with events of the past, the events of Flashpoint were occurring, allowing for a perfect cover for Manhattan's many retcons. In total, Dr. Manhattan had stolen entire decades worth of history from the DC timeline, as well as locking certain characters from both the past and future into a limbo realm of sorts. Over the course of his stay in the DC Universe, Manhattan had begun to be plagued by visions of a future fight between himself and Superman, which would end in total darkness for the Doctor, resulting in him coming to the conclusion that the fight would either end with his death or the destruction of the entire DC Universe. This impending collision between the two was the primary motivation behind Manhattan's tampering with the timeline, which was all part of a plan to weaken the Man of Steel when their fight eventually came to fruition. During the twilight of The New 52, Wally West was able to escape the limbo in which he had been confined, which led to Batman and The Flash becoming aware of Dr. Manhattan's existence and actions for the first time. This ultimately culminated in a brief skirmish between nearly all the heroes of Earth and Dr. Manhattan on the surface of Mars, with the latter easily dispatching Earth's heroes. Back on Earth, superheroes were at their most unpopular stance in the public eye yet, thanks to a conspiracy set in motion by Ozymandias who had also traveled to the DC Universe from the Watchmen Universe by tracking Dr. Manhattan, in an attempt to convince the Doctor to return home and fix their dying world. During the height of this conflict between the governments of Earth and a group of scorned metahumans, Superman and Dr. Manhattan would eventually come face-to-face, as orchestrated by Ozymandias. However, instead of either destroying the universe or being killed by Superman, Dr. Manhattan is inspired by the paragon of hope that Superman represents, thus setting out to fix the damage he has done to the timeline. Through Manhattan's actions, both the Justice Society of America from the Golden Age and the Legion of Superheroes from the 31st Century are restored to the timeline after being trapped in limbo since the start of The New 52, and help Superman to end the conflict between humanity and metahumans. Before Dr. Manhattan returns to his home universe, he sees the truth of the DC timeline, which is that the timeline will constantly reboot and remake itself in order to maintain Superman's legacy and keep the Man of Steel in his prime, until it reaches the 31st century, at which point Superman's history will collide with Legion of Superheroes', resulting in a timeline where the people of Earth finally accept those with superpowers. After Dr. Manhattan and his fellow denizens of the Watchmen Universe return to their world, the heroes of Justice Society and the Legion of Superheroes settle back into the world that they were previously erased from, although their place in history had not yet been solidified. That role would fall to Wally West, who, after overcoming his mental and emotional struggles, would journey into the timeline and gain godlike power in an attempt to restore the lost chapters of the DC timeline.
