The Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme, commenced in 1949, was one of Australia's most ambitious engineering projects. It aimed to harness the power of the Snowy River for electricity generation and irrigation purposes. To undertake this monumental task, a vast workforce was required, leading to the recruitment of thousands of skilled workers from around the world.

Statistics reveal that over 100,000 workers from various countries, including Europe and Asia, were involved in the construction of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. This diverse workforce brought together people from different backgrounds and cultures, contributing to the multicultural environment of the region and beyond.
