Johnny Depp's latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie hasn't yet been released, but he's already preparing to step into the shoes of another outlaw: infamous antivirus expert John McAfee.
'King of the Jungle' reveals the bizarre life of the programmer, who made a fortune as the inventor of the McAfee antivirus brand before losing most of it, moving to Belize and later being hunted for the death of his neighbor there.
According to a statement, the film follows a journalist sent to interview McAfee, who 'arrives in Belize [and] finds himself pulled into McAfee’s escalating paranoia, slippery reality, and murder.'
At that point McAfee was living in what the studio describes as a 'Colonel Kurtz-like compound of guns, sex and madness,' hiding from the Belize government.
They suspected McAfee, now 71, of organizing a private army and entering the drug trade.
A few years before that might have seemed bizarre: The ex-NASA employee had started what would become the world-famous McAfee antivirus company in 1987, and amassed a personal fortune of $100 million.
But McAfee left the company that bore his name in 1994, sold off his stakes in the company two years later, and went on to lose almost everything in the 2007-08 financial crisis.
By 2009 his personal worth was down to just $4 million; he was forced to sell off properties in the US, including one in Hawaii, as his private jet.
The following year Microsoft bought his old company for $7.68 billion.
