1 jan 1997 ano - Judith on the Red Square | Vitaly Komar & Alexander Melamid

Descrição:

Vitaly Komar (born 1943) and Alexander Melamid (born 1945) are (jewish!) Russian painters, sculptors and conceptual artists. They are known for being underground artists who subverted the political and cultural systems of their native Soviet Union. They were founders of the Sots Art movement, a blend of Socialist Realism, Dada, Conceptualism and Pop Art, that parodied the propagandist culture of Stalinist communism.
Judith on the Red Square is a painting included in the “Nostalgic Socialist Realism” series by the Russian artists Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid in 1981-1983. It depicts a young Russian girl as Judith, her face unclear with shadow, holding the decapitated head of Stalin. The painting was made in 1997 and is described by the artists as a “bloodless coup.”
The Red Square is a large open area in Moscow that has been the scene of many public events, including executions. Throughout the Soviet era, it was the site of numerous military parades that showed the strength of the Soviet Union. The name Red Square comes from the rough translation from Russian to English. The words "red" and "beautiful" are the same in old Russian, so the Russian meaning is "beautiful square". The painting was painted in a very political context, referencing Stalin’s death and criticizing his beliefs as a war leader, comparing him to Holofernes.
