“Sieyes, by simplifying everything, had unwittingly confused everything. Under the old regime, Boulainvilliers and Montesquieu as aristocrats had wanted freedom from the centralized monarchy. They had appealed to old Germanic rights and customs but had failed to obtain any ‘aristocratic freedom’ under the monarchy. Instead, the bourgeoisie had overthrown both the monarchy and the aristocracy and had lumped the two, through the voice of Sieyes, into one Gremanic tyranny. ‘Freedom’ had therby changed camps, from the Franks to the Gallo-Romans. This is the first change made in the Nordic myth of freedom found in Tacitus.” pg. 20
