The battle of Monte Cassio took place in Italy. German troops held the monastery of Monte Cassio strategically placed on a hill. This was considered to be one of the most holy sites in Cassio. The Germans claimed that the monastery was a neutral zone, but with heavy fortifications the U.S. expected it to be a supply route. The U.S. decided to drop bombs on Monte Cassio’s Monastery. This is a very controversial decision with the bombing killing monks living in the monastery and turning the once holy monastery into rubble. Right after the bombing Germans went into defensive positions in the Monastery. Even with all American efforts to break the German defensive line, it wouldn’t budge. This is when a new nationality comes into play, The Polish second corps. Polish troops were in charge of taking Monte Cassio’s Monastery, so they started to climb. As the Polish troops started to push up the hill Allied artillery started to hit the hill. After significant Polish losses and hard battles, the Allies secured Monte Cassio
