Guam, Porto Rico, and the Philippines were ceded to the United States following their victory in the Spanish-American war in 1899. The various islands were established as territories owned by the US and the Philippines would be established as a republic. In a book by James Rankin Young and J. Hampton Moore titled The Spanish-American war and battles in the Philippines, they write about the the US's reason for the war "but history shows that even with so peaceloving a nation as our own, there come times when aggravations under which we have patiently suffered can no longer be tolerated with honor and self-respect." (Young et al., 7).
