After the successful Normandy landings on D-day by the Allied forces against Germany, the Allies looked to move closer to Germany from the western side of Germany, while the Soviet Union pushed into Germany from the Eastern front of Germany. This Allied aggression and their speed in moving toward Germany were unplanned. This was problematic because supplies were low, and they were ahead of their supply routes. The Allied troops weren’t getting all of the supplies they needed. On the morning of December 16, more than 200,000 German troops and more than 1000 German tanks launched a surprise attack on Allied troops in the Ardennes Forest, a 75-mile stretch of the front made of dense woods and few roads. After a hard day of fighting the Germans broke through the Allied defensive line. The German troops surrounded most Allied infantry and took important crossroads and started to advance toward the Meuse River.
