These Islamic states on the east coast of Africa were important trade centers. They were a blend of Arab, African, and Persian cultures, and were well known for their sophistication and architecture. Their largest city was Great Zimbabwe, and their location allowed trade through the trans-Saharan networks as well as the Indian ocean. The inhabitants of Swahili city states spoke Bantu.
